Five All-Natural Ways to Create a Signature Holiday Scent in Your Home

|

While candles, room sprays, and plug-in air fresheners can leave your home smelling amazing for a short time, they’re essentially odor-masking quick fixes that don’t do much to improve the air quality in your house. Here are five ways to naturally infuse your home with a signature holiday scent.

Use Decorative Wreaths

Wreaths are not only beautiful holiday decorations, you can use them to scent your home. Buy a grapevine wreath from your local craft store or make a ring from twigs and branches. Stick in fragrant herbs, such as lavender, rosemary or thyme, tie on a ribbon for hanging inside your front door and your guests will be welcomed to a lovely smell when they enter.

Put on a Simmer Pot

For this option, you can either use a simmer pot or set a stainless steel pot set over low heat on your stove. Add in a cup of water and holiday spices that you have around your kitchen, such as cinnamon sticks, nutmeg, cloves, vanilla beans and orange peels. Try adding a few drops of your favorite holiday essential oil. The scent will travel throughout your home and linger long after your guests have left.

Create an Olive Oil Candle

Candles don’t just smell nice, they provide a beautiful backdrop of illumination for holiday gatherings. To make your own all-natural olive oil candles, put a #2 wick into the bottom of a short, wide mason jar — wicks are available in most craft stores or online — then add a few drops of essential oil. Try a holiday combination such as orange and clove, or peppermint. Top it off with olive oil, and you’ll have a clean-burning, long-lasting, natural candle.

Make Deodorizing Powder

Baking soda is a highly effective deodorizer by itself, and adding essential oils to it turns this inexpensive household product into a wonderful home fragrance option. Fill a jar or container with baking soda and add up to 20 drops of natural essential oils such as lemon and cinnamon, or grapefruit and lavender. Top it with a piece of cheesecloth tied on with a pretty ribbon, or a shaker top that fits your container.

Put Together Potpourri

Potpourri is widely available in stores, but it rarely smells as great as the homemade version. Thinly slice apples and oranges and bake 250 degrees Fahrenheit until dry. Allow the fruit slices to cool, then mix with cinnamon, anise, and clove. Fill a nice glass or porcelain bowl with the potpourri or set several small containers around your home.
