Help! Why Is My Heater Blowing Cold Air?

|

Your home’s heating system is made up of various components that all must work together to provide the warmth you and your family desire. Any time one of these parts isn’t working properly, you could end up with cool air flowing through the vents. Here are a few potential reasons your heater is blowing cold air.

Lack of Fuel

Every furnace needs a fuel source, whether it’s oil, gas, or electric. If there’s no oil in the tank, the furnace won’t supply heat. If it’s a gas system, the valves must be working properly to supply the furnace with fuel. Breakers must be in good working order when it comes to electric systems. Oftentimes, furnaces will blow cold air when there is a block in the fuel source.

Thermostat

If your heating system is blowing cold air, the thermostat could be the potential source of the problem. Your thermostat should be set for heating, and it needs to be set to a higher temperature than your home’s current temperature. If your home is 65 degrees, the system won’t respond to a call for heat if the thermostat is set at 65 degrees. Batteries should be changed to ensure low battery levels aren’t causing your home’s heating to malfunction. When batteries are low, the thermostat is unable to communicate with the furnace and therefore won’t supply warmer air.

Damaged Ductwork

If there are holes in the ductwork due to broken seals or improper installation, the furnace may be working, but the heat still isn’t reaching the vents. Cold air could be leaking into the ductwork, allowing hot air to escape. If your ductwork is damaged, you’ll feel cool air coming from your vents instead of the warm air being produced by the furnace. It’s essential to have experienced professionals install and inspect your ductwork to prevent any problems down the road.

Cleaning and Maintenance

Before the start of the heating season, maintenance should be done on your home’s furnace. It’s important to check and replace your filters on a regular basis. Old, dirty filters can block airflow and cause your system’s burner to shut down, which can make it tough, if not impossible, to heat a space. In addition, you’ll want to make sure maintenance is done to check for a dirty fan or clogged condensate pump. Issues concerning your unit’s fan or pump can prevent the burners in your HVAC system from functioning properly.
