How to Set Your Thermostat For Summer Savings

|

During those long, hot summer months, we rely on our air conditioners to keep us comfortable from the hot and humid outdoors. However, while our ACs may keep us cool, your blood will still boil once you receive your monthly electric bill.
So the question is, how do we manage to protect ourselves from summer heat without breaking the bank? The answer is by setting your thermostat at just the right temperature. Here is everything homeowners should know about how to set their thermostats during the summer.

When You’re Home…

When you are at home during the summer, set your thermostat to 77 degrees Fahrenheit for maximum comfort. This will keep your home cool, without running up your electricity bill.
If this temperature is still too warm for you, try other ways to cool down. Ceiling fans for example can help to keep you cool without running up your electric bill. While the fans won’t lower the temperature, they make you feel cooler and lessen your need for air conditioning.

When You’re Away…

When you’re out of the house during the summer set your thermostat to 82 degrees Fahrenheit. While you may think that turning off your AC or setting it higher than 82 degrees is saving you money on your electric bill, this is not necessarily true. Your AC system actually uses more energy try to bring your house to a comfortable temperature once it’s heated up beyond 82 degrees, than if you left it set to a lower temperature during the day.
So before you leave for the day, remember to turn up the temperature on your thermostat, but not above 82 degrees. Also, try closing all your blinds or drapes to help keep your home cool.

Programmable Thermostats

While we try our best to always set our thermostats at the right temperature, it can be hard to remember to switch the temperature before we leave for the day. That’s why the best way to stay cool and keep temperatures down indoors is with a programmable thermostat. These thermostats can actually take note of your schedule and will automatically change your home’s temperature to an energy-efficient mode when you leave. There are even thermostats that operate off of your wi-fi network that will communicate via your smartphone. Imagine being able to change the settings on your thermostat while you’re at work or at the gym, all with the touch of a button on your phone. It’s great for any application, residential or commercial, and especially for rental properties or second homes.
