Why Are My Rooms Different Temperatures?

|

Have you ever woken up in the middle of the night freezing, even though you specifically remember setting the temperature at a comfortable 72 degrees before bed? You get up and check the thermostat only to discover someone lowered it to 67 degrees. No wonder you were cold! We’ve all played this game before. Someone’s bedroom is too hot, while another’s is too cold and the battle for the thermostat setting rages on all night.

It’s likely your body chemistry isn’t to blame for this. There are several problems that may be occurring in your home and causing uneven temperatures. Learn more about these issues and how to solve them, here:

Why Different Rooms Experience Different Temperatures

Your home’s AC system is quite complex, meaning it takes several different components to keep your home at a comfortable temperature. Sometimes, one or more of these components may experience an issue. Here are a few of the most common AC-related issues that could be causing varying temperatures throughout your home.

Poor Insulation: Proper insulation is key to keeping your home cool when it’s hot out and warm when it’s cold out. The space inside your walls should be compactly insulated and your attic should have at least 12 inches of insulation. If any part of your home lacks sufficient insulation, it could lead to uneven temperatures.

Deteriorated or Improperly Sized Duct System: Your duct system delivers the air to each room, so if your ducts are falling apart some of the air is getting lost in the attic.

Properly sealed ducts can alleviate many of these problems.

Additionally, a duct system that is improperly sized can be the cause of many cold and hot spots. How often have you complained that the last bedroom down the hall is the hottest? It’s likely because it’s at the end of the duct line and getting the least airflow through a duct that is too small.

Return Air Vents: The return air vent is where your AC pulls out the warm air from your home to make room for the cool air. Some homes simply do not have enough return air vents in their home, leaving them unable to dispel warm air from certain parts of the house.

Your AC Unit Might Not be the Problem

If none of these AC-related issues seem to add up, uneven temperatures may just be a result of your home’s layout. Multi-level homes are more susceptible to uneven cooling since hot air generally rises upstairs. If you only have one thermostat and it’s located downstairs, it has no way of knowing or accounting for the temperature upstairs.

Rooms that face east, and therefore get more sunshine, may be warmer than other rooms in your homes.
