How to Prep Your Home for the Holidays

|

Many of us look forward to spending time with family and friends during the holidays, which will be here before we know it. Still, not everyone knows how to properly prepare their home for an influx of guests and changing temperatures. Read ahead for some DIY tips and tricks that will help you prep your home, protect your property and even lower your energy bills.

Look for Insulation Problems

While Floridians do not have to worry about extreme cold, insulation problems can still cost quite a bit of money. Most homeowners will want to inspect the insulation in their attic at least once or twice a year to see if the floor joists are exposed. If you notice any damage or you can see joists through the insulation, then it is time to re-insulate your attic. Cracks around vents, windows, water pipes, and electrical lines should be patched with insulating foam or clear caulking.

Inspect Your Roof and Rain Gutters

There are few things that can wreak as much havoc in a home like a damaged roof. This is why it is important for families in a wet climate to check on their roof, rain gutters and downspouts at least a few times a year. In addition to visible damage on the outside of the roof, you can also go into the attic on a sunny day and look for any pin holes that are allowed in sunlight. Downspouts and rain gutters should be cleared of any debris and inspected for cracks.

Sanitize the Kitchen

The changing weather can make it difficult for our bodies to fight off infections, and a kitchen that is covered in germs will put even more pressure on your family’s immune systems. Everyone should take some time to deep clean and sanitize their kitchen at least once a year. Just remember, certain chemicals do more harm than good. Use a homemade, all-purpose cleanser of baking soda and vinegar, and try adding a few drops of your favorite essential oils for an extra burst of freshness. Kitchen cleaning is also a good time to go through the cupboards and discard any food items that have expired over the summer to make room for holiday foods.
