How to Unclog the Toilet at Your Friend’s House

|

Everyone has those most embarrassing moments in life. And many of us have encountered that moment at a friend’s house when flush goes to the toilet and… oh no! It’s clogged. Regardless of whose fault it is, these accidents do happen. So, what should you do if you clog the toilet at a friend’s house?

What Not to Do

Above all else, don’t keep trying to flush. When a clogged toilet is flushed multiple times, water can overflow, creating an even bigger mess than there was to start. Imagine the friend’s fright in the other room when pools of water start draining out the bathroom door. So, don’t make the mistake of getting flushing friendly when you encounter a clog.

If Possible, Plunge

Typically, plunging a clogged toilet will do the trick. In most traditional homes, where is the plunger kept? In the bathroom, of course. So, if you have clogged your friend’s toilet, first check to see if there is a plunger nearby. Look under the sink or in the bathroom closet. Many times the situation can be remedied without anyone knowing it was even clogged.

Alternatives to Plunging

If you can’t find the plunger, don’t panic. There are a handful of other ways to unclog a toilet for those times a plunger is nowhere to be found. If there isn’t a plunger, search the bathroom for some shampoo, soap or other sudsy substance. Pour a generous amount of the shampoo or soap into the toilet along with a bucket of very hot water. Note that this will only work as long as the toilet is not already overflowing. Fill the toilet, but do not overflow. It may take time, but the blockage should eventually subside.

Ask for Help

If there isn’t a plunger to be found and the soapy mixture doesn’t work, try discretely notifying the friend of the clog. It may be easiest to let them know via text. Or, try asking where you can find the plunger. Chances are your friend will appreciate honesty and the attempt to take care of the problem.
