Top 5 Reasons My Air Isn’t Working

|

Homeowner’s in Central Florida know the dread when they wake up to a thermostat reading 85 degrees or warm air blowing from their air conditioning vents. That can only mean one thing. My AC is broken! Here are some common air conditioning complaints and possible fixes.

The Thermostat Is Blank

Often when the thermostat is blank, it means that the float switch in your air handler (inside unit) is tripped. When the drain pan fills up too high and there is a clog, the float switch turns off the system and kills the power to the thermostat. The float switch can easily be reset, but the clog must be cleared first. Other reasons for a blank thermostat might be dead batteries or a tripped breaker.

Blowing Warm Air

This is a common complaint among customers that can have many different origins. The problem could be something as simple as a tripped breaker to the condenser (outside unit) or something as complicated as a refrigerant leak. Checking the breakers is always the first thing you should do to prevent an unnecessary service call.

Unit Is Leaking Water

Water leaks can be a real headache for homeowners, especially when they are inside the house or coming from a unit located in the attic. Clogged drain lines account for most water issues with air conditioners which is why you should have regular maintenance performed to lower your chances of this potentially damaging problem. If a clogged drain line isn’t the culprit, the unit could be freezing up, meaning there is a refrigerant leak or dirty evaporator coil. Always check your filter first to ensure a dirty filter is not blocking airflow and causing the unit to freeze (and then thaw out water all over your garage).

Loud Or Humming Noise Coming From The Condenser

Noises from the outside unit often indicate an electrical component failure such as a contactor, capacitor or compressor. Anytime you hear an unusual noise coming from your air conditioner the smartest call is to contact a trusted A/C service company for a professional diagnosis.

No Air Is Coming From The Vents

When your system is not blowing any air, the most prudent first step is to check the breaker to the air handler. The inside unit is responsible for the air blowing through the vents. If the breaker is not tripped it’s possible the blower motor is bad or there is another electrical issue with the air handler.
