Every summer it happens again and again – How to prevent the Drain Line from clogging
Florida homeowners value air conditioning as their home’s most prized appliance. Unfortunately, in our hot and humid climate, it’s not uncommon for problems to arise. One of the major concerns to look out for regarding your home or office HVAC system is a clogged drain pipe.
What Function Does Your AC Drain Pipe Serve?
A frequently used AC unit produces moisture, and that moisture is typically captured in a condensate drain pan. The drain pan is connected to a drain pipe, the part of your system responsible for carrying the condensation that accumulates in the drain pan to the outdoors.
However, from time to time, the drain pipe can get clogged with debris and other obstructions. When this happens, water can overflow, leaving you with a damaging mess. If you notice your drain pan filling more frequently than usual, you may have blockage in your drain pipe. Here are a few troubleshooting tips to try when your AC’s drain pipe is clogged.
Remove Water From The Drain Pan
As a first step, you can remove some of the water from the drain pan. Try using a cup to scoop some of the excess water into a bucket. You can also use several towels to absorb the moisture. Be careful not to get water outside of the drain pan as this can cause water damage to the home.
Remove The Clog
Blockage in drain pipes is typically made up of algae, however, there are a number of other things that could be causing the clog. When it comes to clearing and removing the clog, there are a few different things you can try.
If you own a wet/dry vacuum, this is a good device to use in removing whatever obstructions may be causing the clog. Or, if you have a long snaking device, you can snake the pipe as you would do with backed-up toilet. Be sure the snake is equally as long as the drain pipe, otherwise, it may not reach the area of blockage.
Call For Professional Service
There are instances when the clog is too significant or complex to successfully and effectively remove on your own. In some cases, you may not have the right gear, or you may not be comfortable working on your HVAC system without the proper training and experience. Professional service is available for those who are concerned about their clog and is a smart option for those who want to prevent the problem from becoming a costlier and more damaging situation.
